FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 12, 2017)-For the first time in the scholarship’s history, two people have been selected to receive the Mikel Moreno Award. Thomas Cruz and Fallon Wentz will be receiving this prestigious honor during the upcoming ABBI World Finals in Las Vegas on November 4.

“ABBI, PBR, stock contractors and other generous sponsors have made it possible for us to award the Mikel Moreno Memorial Scholarship Award to two deserving students this year,” said Cindy Rosser. “We hope this is something we can continue to do to support our deserving young contractors who are carrying on Mikel’s legacy.”

Mikel Moreno was the son of Rosser and Julio Moreno. He passed away after a hard-fought battle with leukemia. An outstanding stock contractor and student athlete, Mikel was an inspiration to all who knew him. This is the eleventh year of the award.

"These kids, and all of our junior stock contractors, are the future of our sport," said ABBI Executive Director Jay Daugherty. " ABBI is honored to once again be a part of the Mikel Moreno Award and we are proud of what this year's recipients have accomplished as stock contractors and of their dedication to our sport."

Cruz is currently a Freshman at Tarleton in Stephenville, Texas. He is from Ozona, Texas and was active in the ABBI Junior Futurity program starting in 2010 through the last event of this season. He is majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Range Management.  Wentz is from Prossser, Wash. and is also a freshman this year. She continues to help with her family's rodeo business while studying at Columbia Basin Junior College and hopes to pursue a degree in journalism and write for a western or rodeo publication someday.

The dual Scholarship Awards were made possible by donations from  PBR, ABBI, Cindy Rosser, Julio Moreno, Gary and Nancy Long/Long Ranch, Gold Coast Bucking Bulls, Bethe Deal, Hodges and Shuler Bucking Bulls, and Clyde and Susan Himes/Shroyer Motor Company.
